Welcome! I am the author of Personal Stereo, a cultural history of the Walkman. My writing has appeared in The New York Times, Slate, The Nation, The Cut, the Times Literary Supplement, and The Guardian, among other publications.
I have covered a range of topics, including the rise of the self-help memoir, the nuisance of TVs in public places, and the anguish of a widely misunderstood postpartum mood disorder. One area of abiding interest to me is the vexed relationship between our species and our planet. I also write book reviews, and occasionally do Q&As (here’s an old favorite).
My work has received support from the Robert B. Silvers Foundation and the UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability. I live in Southern California with my family. Oh, and it’s pronounced TOO-hoose DOO-brow.
